The Week-By-Week First Communion Party Checklist Every Mom Needs

(Part 2 of Our Communion Planning Series)

Welcome back! If you haven’t already, check out Part 1 of our First Communion planning guide to get started with choosing a date, sending invitations, and planning your menu.

Now it’s time to break everything down into easy, week-by-week steps. This is where you stop stressing and start feeling organized, calm, and totally in control.

2 Weeks Before: Lock In the Details

You’re halfway there! Now’s the time to tie up loose ends and focus on the spiritual and sentimental touches that make this day so special.

✅ Confirm RSVPs

Reach out to anyone who hasn’t responded. You’ll need a solid headcount for food, seating, and favors.

✅ Finalize the Menu

  • If you’re cooking, create your shopping list and prep schedule.

  • If using a caterer, confirm the order and delivery/pick-up time.

  • Don’t forget drinks, cake, utensils, and napkins!

✅ Plan Party Favors

Simple keepsakes like rosary beads, cross keychains, or personalized prayer cards are perfect. Attach a short thank-you note or blessing for guests to take home.

✅ Finalize Rentals & Equipment

If you're using rented tables, chairs, tents, or A/V equipment, now's the time to double-check your bookings.

1 Week Before: Prep & Personalize

This week is all about making it beautiful — and meaningful — for your child and your guests.

✅ Decor & Setup

  • Decorate as much as you can ahead of time (especially indoors).

  • Print or display your child’s First Communion photos, baptism photo, or faith milestones.

  • Hang banners, set up a photo booth backdrop, and prep centerpieces.

✅ Craft Stations or Games

  • Kids love a coloring corner, DIY bracelet station, or simple outdoor games like ring toss or bubbles.

  • Set these up early or delegate to a teen/helper on the day of.

✅ Prepare a Blessing or Toast

Ask a godparent or grandparent to offer a short prayer before the meal. It doesn't have to be formal — just heartfelt.

Day Before: Get Ready, Set… Almost Go!

✅ Decorate (Final Touches)

  • Set the tables, arrange centerpieces, and layout favors.

  • Test any music or slideshow equipment.

  • Pre-chill drinks and cover outdoor seating if weather may change.

✅ Set Up the Food Area

  • If you're cooking, prep what you can: wash produce, bake desserts, assemble cold dishes.

  • Confirm any delivery times or pickups with vendors or caterers.

Day Of: Celebrate and Soak It All In

✅ Assign Simple Roles

Ask a friend or family member to:

  • Take photos

  • Greet guests

  • Refill drinks

  • Watch over the kid zone

You’ll thank yourself for sharing the load so you can enjoy the moment.

✅ Final Setup

Put out food, turn on music, light candles (if using), and make sure your child is dressed, fed, and feeling special.

✅ Say the Blessing

Gather everyone and start the meal with a short prayer. It sets the tone and honors the reason you’re all gathered together.

Bonus: Your Take-Home Moment

✅ Take Lots of Pictures

Capture hugs, giggles, decorations, and group shots. Don’t forget candids of your child with godparents, grandparents, and friends.

✅ Send Guests Home with a Smile

Have a small thank-you table near the exit with party favors, leftover treats, or photo booth prints.
